Title: Measurement of inclusive jet production and nuclear modifications in pPb collisions at $$\sqrt{s_{_\mathrm {NN}}} =5.02\,\mathrm{TeV} $$

Abstract

© 2016, CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration. Inclusive jet production in pPb collisions at a nucleon–nucleon (NN) center-of-mass energy of √s NN = 5.02TeV is studied with the CMS detector at the LHC. A data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 30.1 nb - 1 is analyzed. The jet transverse momentum spectra are studied in seven pseudorapidity intervals covering the range - 2.0 < η CM < 1.5 in the NN center-of-mass frame. The jet production yields at forward and backward pseudorapidity are compared and no significant asymmetry about η CM = 0 is observed in the measured kinematic range. The measurements in the pPb system are compared to reference jet spectra obtained by extrapolation from previous measurements in pp collisions at √s=7TeV. In all pseudorapidity ranges, nuclear modifications in inclusive jet production are found to be small, as predicted by next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations that incorporate nuclear effects in the parton distribution functions.

The data samples used in the analysis correspond to integrated luminosities of 28pb<sup>–1</sup> and 35nb<sup>–1</sup> for pp and pPb collisions, respectively. Prompt and nonprompt J/ψ mesons, the latter produced in the decay of B hadrons, are measured in their dimuon decay channels. Differential cross sections are measured in the transverse momentum range of 2 < p<sub>T</sub><30GeV/c, and center-of-mass rapidity ranges of |y<sub>CM</sub>| < 2.4 (pp) and –2.87 <<a href='#' onclick='$(this).hide().next().show().next().show();return false;' style='margin-left:10px;'>more »</a><span style='display:none;'> y<sub>CM</sub> < 1.93 (pPb). The nuclear modification factor, R<sub>pPb</sub>, is measured as a function of both p<sub>T</sub> and y<sub>CM</sub>. Small modifications to the J/ψ cross sections are observed in pPb relative to pp collisions. The ratio of J/ψ production cross sections in p-going and Pb-going directions, RFB, studied as functions of p<sub>T</sub> and y<sub>CM</sub>, shows a significant decrease for increasing transverse energy deposited at large pseudorapidities. In addition, the cross section ratio of p+Pb and Pb+p data is presented. The results are discussed in terms of the saturation of gluon densities at low fractional parton momenta. None of the models under consideration describes all the data over the full jet-energy range and for all beam configurations. The spectra are presented over the transverse momentum ranges spanning 0.5 $$ < p_{\mathrm{T}} < $$ 400 GeV in pp and 0.7 $$ < p_{\mathrm{T}} < $$ 400 GeV in PbPb collisions. The corresponding nuclear modification factor, $${R_\mathrm{AA}} $$, is measured in bins of collision centrality. The $${R_\mathrm{AA}} $$ in the 5% most central collisions shows a maximal suppression by a factor of 7-8 in the $$p_{\mathrm{T}}$$ region of 6-9 GeV. This dip is followed by an increase, which continues up to the highest $$ p_{\mathrm{T}}$$ measured, and approaches unity in the vicinity of $$p_{\mathrm{T}}= $$ 200 GeV. The $${R_\mathrm{AA}} $$ is compared to theoretical predictions and earlier experimental results at lower collision energies. Here, the newly measured pp spectrum is combined with the pPb spectrum previously published by the CMS Collaboration to construct the pPb nuclear modification factor, $${R_{\mathrm{ p }\mathrm{A}}} $$, up to 120 GeV. It is performed in the dimuon decay channel, through the detection of muons with pseudorapidity -4 < ημ< -2.5 and transverse momentum $$ {p}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mu } $$> 20 GeV/c in the laboratory frame. The invariant yield and nuclear modification factor are measured for opposite-sign dimuons with invariant mass 60 < mμμ< 120 GeV/c2 and rapidity 2.5 <$$ {y}_{\mathrm{cms}}^{\mu \mu} $$< 4. They are presented as a function of rapidity and, for the Pb-Pb collisions, of centrality as well. The results are compared with theoretical calculations, both with and without nuclear modifications to the Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs). In p-Pb collisions the center-of-mass frame is boosted with respect to the laboratory frame, and the measurements cover the backward (-4.46 <$$ {y}_{\mathrm{cms}}^{\mu \mu} $$< -2.96) and forward (2.03 <$$ {y}_{\mathrm{cms}}^{\mu \mu} $$< 3.53) rapidity regions. For the p-Pb collisions, the results are consistent within experimental and theoretical uncertainties with calculations that include both free-nucleon and nuclear-modified PDFs.
