The synthesis, characterization and density functional theory calculations of mononuclear Ni and Cu complexes supported by the N,N’-Dimethyl-N,N’-bis-(pyridine-2-ylmethyl)-1,2-diaminoethane ligand and its derivatives are reported. The complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography as well as by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and EPR spectroscopy. The solid state structure of these coordination complexes revealed that the geometry of the complex depended on the identity of the metal center. Solution phase characterization data are in accord with the solid phase structure, indicating minimal structural changes in solution. Reappraisal of the amide coordination mode: solution properties of nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes of ligands involving simultaneously enamine and amide groups

The behavior of the Cu/sup 2+//L/sub 1/ system in solution was reappraised through the isolation and characterization of the copper(II) complexes involving the ligand L/sub 1/ in different states of protonation. Also included in the study are the homologous nickel(II) complexes and the copper(II) and nickel(II) complexes of related ligands L/sub 2/ and L/sub 3/. L/sub 1/ is the ligand 3,8-dimethyl-4,7-diazadeca-2,8-diene-1,10-diamide synthesized from acetoacetamide and 1,2,diaminoethane. L/sub 2/ and L/sub 3/ were similarly synthesized using acetoacetanilide and ethylacetoacetate instead of acetoamide. Experimental and Computational Studies of the Macrocyclic Effect of an Auxiliary Ligand on Electron and Proton Transfers Within Ternary Copper(II)–Histidine Complexes

The dissociation of [CuII(L)His]•2+ complexes [L = diethylenetriamine (dien) or 1,4,7-triazacyclononane (9-aneN3)] bears a strong resemblance to the previously reported behavior of [CuII(L)GGH]•2+ complexes. We have used low energy collision-induced dissociation experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d) level to study the macrocyclic effect of the auxiliary ligands on the formation of His•+ from prototypical [CuII(L)His]•2+ systems. Comparative studies of mononuclear nickel(II) complexes with N[sub 2]S[sub x] (x = 2-4) ligands

The new ligands 1,12-bis(2-pyridyl)-2,5,8,11-tetrathiadecane (L3) and 1,13-bis(2-pyridyl)-2,5,9,12-tetrathiaundecane (L4) their complexes and those of 1,6-bis(2-pyridyl)-2,5-dithiahexane (L1) and 1,9-bis(2-pyridyl)-2,5,8-trithianonane (L2) have been prepared as their perchlorate and tetrafluoroborate salts. All complexes are pseudooctahedral with coordination sites filled by donor atoms of ligands L1-L4 or solvent. There is no coordination of anions to the metal either in the solids or in solution, but evidence is presented for a second coordination sphere interaction in some cases.
