Realization of the axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model in U3Al2Ge3

Title: Realization of the axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model in $U_{3} {Al}_{2} {Ge}_{3}$

Abstract

Here we report small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements and theoretical modeling of U3Al2Ge3. Analysis of the SANS data reveals a phase transition to sinusoidally modulated magnetic order at TN = 63 K to be second order and a first-order phase transition to ferromagnetic order at T-c = 48 K. Within the sinusoidally modulated magnetic phase (T-c < T < T-N), we uncover a dramatic change, by a factor of 3, in the ordering wave vector as a function of temperature. These observations all indicate that U3Al2Ge3 is a close realization of the three-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model, a prototypical framework for describing commensurate to incommensurate phase transitions in frustrated magnets.

We present a unified description of the response of the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet β–Li₂IrO₃ to applied magnetic fields along the orthorhombic directions a, b, and c. We used single-crystal neutron diffraction to investigate the magnetic structures of the multiferroic GdMn₂O₅. The system undergoes a first-order incommensurate to commensurate magnetic transition below 33 K, accompanied by the appearance of electric polarization P. Upon cooling, P increases smoothly while the magnetic order shows an abrupt enhancement in intensity below 20 K owing to the large increase of the rare-earth Gd moment. The macroscopic magnetic properties and microscopic magnetic structure of Rb₂Mn₃(MoO₄)₃ (OH)₂ (space group Pn ma) are investigated by magnetization, heat capacity, and single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements. The compound's crystal structure contains bond-alternating [Mn₃ O₁₁] ^∞ chains along the b axis, formed by isosceles triangles of Mn ions occupying two crystallographically nonequivalent sites (the Mn1 site on the base and Mn2 site on the vertex). The recent discoveries of proximate quantum spin-liquid compounds and their potential application in quantum computing informs the search for new candidate materials for quantum spin-ice and spin-liquid physics. While the majority of such work has centered on members of the pyrochlore family due to their inherently frustrated linked tetrahedral structure, the rare-earth pyrogermanates also show promise for possible frustrated magnetic behavior.
