Time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been carried out on polycrystalline samples of the 4d³ and 5d³ double pervoskite antiferromagnets La₂LiRuO₆ and La₂LiOsO₆. These reveal the development of an inelastic spin gap in La₂LiRuO₆ and La₂LiOsO₆ of ~1.8(8) and 6(1) meV, below their respective ordering temperatures TN, ~23.8 and 30 K. The bandwidths of the spin excitations are shown to be ~5.7(9)and12(1)meV, respectively, at low temperatures. Spin gaps are surprising in such magnets as the t_2g levels of Ru⁵⁺ or Os⁵⁺ are expected to be half-filled, resulting in an anticipated orbital singlet for both materials. Phase transition preceding magnetic long-range order in the double perovskite ${Ba}_{2} {NaOsO}_{6}$

Recent theoretical studies [G. Chen et al., Phys. Rev. B 82, 174440 (2010); H. Ishizuka et al., Phys. Rev. B 90, 184422 (2014)] for the magnetic Mott insulator Ba₂NaOsO₆ have proposed a low-temperature order parameter that breaks lattice rotational symmetry without breaking time reversal symmetry, leading to a nematic phase just above the magnetic ordering temperature. We present high-resolution calorimetric and magnetization data of the same Ba₂NaOsO₆ single crystal and show evidence for a weakly field-dependent phase transition occurring at a temperature of T_s ≈ 9.5K, above the magnetic ordering temperature of T_c ≈ 7.5K. Coincident structural and magnetic order in ${BaFe}_{2} {({As}_{1 - x} P_{x})}_{2}$ revealed by high-resolution neutron diffraction

We present neutron dffraction analysis of BaFe₂(As_1-xP_x)₂ over a wide temperature (10 to 300 K) and compositional (0.11 < x < 0.79) range, including the normal state, the magnetically ordered state, and the superconducting state. The paramagnetic to spin-density wave and orthorhombic to tetragonal transitions are first order and coincident within the sensitivity of our measurements (~ 0:5 K). Extrapolation of the orthorhombic order parameter down to zero suggests that structural quantum criticality cannot exist at compositions higher than x = 0.28, which is much lower than values determined using other methods, but in good agreement with our observations ofmore »« less
