Title: Phase transitions and baryogenesis from decays

Abstract

Here, we study scenarios in which the baryon asymmetry is generated from the decay of a particle whose mass originates from the spontaneous breakdown of a symmetry. This is realized in many models, including low-scale leptogenesis and theories with classical scale invariance. Symmetry breaking in the early universe proceeds through a phase transition that gives the parent particle a time-dependent mass, which provides an additional departure from thermal equilibrium that could modify the efficiency of baryogenesis from out-of-equilibrium decays. We characterize the effects of various types of phase transitions and show that an enhancement in the baryon asymmetry from decays is possible if the phase transition is of the second order, although such models are typically fine-tuned. We also stress the role of new annihilation modes that deplete the parent particle abundance in models realizing such a phase transition, reducing the efficacy of baryogenesis. A proper treatment of baryogenesis in such models therefore requires the inclusion of the effects we study in this paper.

Non-minimal Higgs inflation and non-thermal leptogenesis in a supersymmetric Pati-Salam model

We consider a supersymmetric (SUSY) Grand Unified Theory (GUT) based on the gauge group G{sub PS} = SU(4){sub C} × SU(2){sub L} × SU(2){sub R}, which incorporates non-minimal chaotic inflation, driven by a quartic potential associated with the Higgs fields involved in the spontaneous breaking of G{sub PS}. The inflationary model relies on renormalizable superpotential terms and does not lead to overproduction of magnetic monopoles. It is largely independent of the one-loop radiative corrections and can become consistent with the current observational data on the inflationary observables, with the symmetry breaking scale of G{sub PS} assuming its SUSY value. Baryogenesis via leptogenesis: Spontaneous $B$ and $L$ violation

In order to address the baryon asymmetry in the Universe one needs to understand the origin of baryon and lepton number violation. In this article, we discuss the mechanism of baryogenesis via leptogenesis to explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry in theories with spontaneous breaking of baryon and lepton number. In this context, a lepton asymmetry is generated through the out-of-equilibrium decays of right-handed neutrinos at the high-scale, while local baryon number must be broken below the multi-TeV scale to satisfy the cosmological bounds on the dark matter relic density. Baryogenesis and gravitational waves from runaway bubble collisions

We propose a novel mechanism for production of baryonic asymmetry in the early Universe. The mechanism takes advantage of the strong first order phase transition that produces runaway bubbles in the hidden sector that propagate almost without friction with ultra-relativistic velocities. Collisions of such bubbles can non-thermally produce heavy particles that further decay out-of-equilibrium into the SM and produce the observed baryonic asymmetry. This process can proceed at the very low temperatures, providing a new mechanism of post-sphaleron baryogenesis. GUT baryogenesis with primordial black holes

In models of baryogenesis based on grand unified theories (GUTs), the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is generated through the CP and baryon number violating, out-of-equilibrium decays of very massive gauge or Higgs bosons in the very early Universe. Recent constraints on the scale of inflation and the subsequent temperature of reheating, however, have put pressure on many such models. Electroweak-like baryogenesis with new chiral matter

We propose a framework where a phase transition associated with a gauge symmetry breaking that occurs (not far) above the electroweak scale sets a stage for baryogenesis similar to the electroweak baryogenesis in the Standard Model. A concrete realization utilizes the breaking of SU(2)_R × U(1)_X → U(1)_Y. New chiral fermions charged under the extended gauge symmetry have nonzero lepton numbers, which makes the B - L symmetry anomalous. The new lepton sector contains a large flavor-dependent CP violation, similar to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa phase, without inducing sizable electric dipole moments of the Standard Model particles.
