Recently, variational Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) mean-field equations were shown to possess a mathematically well-defined zero-pairing limit, independently of the closed- or open-shell character of the system under consideration. This limit is non-trivial for open-shell systems such that HFB theory does {\it not} reduce to the Hartree-Fock (HF) formalism in all cases. The present work extends this analysis to finite-temperature HFB (FTHFB) theory by investigating the behavior of this more general formalism in the combined zero-temperature and zero-pairing limits. The temperature dependence of deformations and pair gaps is calculated for /sup 148/Sm, /sup 170/Er, and /sup 186,188/Os. Increasing the temperature induces a variety of shape phase transitions: prolate and oblate to spherical, triaxial to oblate, and spherical to prolate. Heating also produces the superfluid to normal phase transition.

Dynamical Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory of vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates at finite temperature

We present a method utilizing the continuity equation for the condensate density to make predictions of the precessional frequency of single off-axis vortices and of vortex arrays in Bose-Einstein condensates at finite temperature. We also present an orthogonalized Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) formalism. We solve the continuity equation for the condensate density self-consistently with the orthogonalized HFB equations and find stationary solutions in the frame rotating at this frequency. As an example of the utility of this formalism we obtain time-independent solutions for quasi-two-dimensional rotating systems in the corotating frame. We compare these results with time-dependent predictions where we simulate stirring ofmore » the condensate.« less
