Constraining the 22Ne(α,γ)26Mg and 22Ne(α,n)25Mg reaction rates using sub-Coulomb α-transfer reactions

The 22Ne(α,γ)26Mg and 22Ne(α,n)25Mg reactions play an important role in astrophysics because they have significant influence on the neutron flux during the weak branch of the s-process. We constrain the astrophysical rates for these reactions by measuring partial α-widths of resonances in 26Mg located in the Gamow window for the capture. These resonances were populated using 22Ne(6Li,d)26Mg and 22Ne(7Li,t)26Mg reactions at energies near the Coulomb barrier. At these low energies α-transfer reactions favor population of low spin states and the extracted partial α-widths for the observed resonances exhibit only minor dependence on the model parameters. NEUTRONS AND GAMMA RAYS FROM Po ²¹⁰ –B ¹⁰ (α, n ) AND Po ²¹⁰ –B ¹¹ (α, n ) SOURCES

The neutron energy spectra from Po--B/sup 10/( alpha ,n) and Po-B¹¹ ( alpha ,n) sources were determined by the nuclear emulsion method and with a proton recoil spectrometer. Gamma spectra were also measured. The Po-B¹⁰ neutron spectrum extends to an energy of 6.0 Mev and shows two peaks, at 1.0 and 3.0 Mev. The lines in the gamma spectrum are not in coincidence with neutrons but are caused by competing reactions. The first-order sensitivities of the (α,n) neutron source rate density in a homogeneous material to isotopic (α,n) cross sections, elemental electronic stopping power data, and general coefficients for the nuclear stopping power are derived for the total neutron source and the energy-dependent neutron source. The physics bases for some of the equations in the SOURCES4C calculation of the stopping power are briefly discussed. The derivatives have been implemented in SOURCES4C. In simple PuO₂ and PuB₂ test problems, the computed derivatives compare extremely well with central differences.
