Samples of natural populations of Drosophila pseudoobscura were taken in certain localities in Caiifornia and in Arizona. The laboratory-bred progeny of the wild flies were utilized to make crosses, the offspring of which had inbreeding coefficients of F = 0, 0.125 and 0.250. Batches of 50 eggs (in one of the experiments with replications) were taken from each cross, and the numbers of adults developing from these eggs were recorded. Many derivations of effective population sizes have been suggested in the literature; however, few account for the breeding structure and none can readily be expanded to subdivided populations. Breeding structures influence gene correlations through their effects on the number of breeding individuals of each sex, the mean number of progeny per female, and the variance in the number of progeny produced by males and females. Additionally, hierarchical structuring in a population is determined by the number of breeding groups and the migration rates of males and females among such groups. Inbreeding estimation from population data: models, procedures, and implications

Four different estimation procedures for models of population structure are compared. The parameters of the models are shown to be equivalent and, in most cases, easily expressed in terms of the parameters Wright calls ''F-statistics.'' We have estimated the parameters of each of these models with data on nine codominant allele pairs in 47 Yanomama villages, and we find that the different estimators for a given parameter all yield more or less equivalent results. STUDIES ON A SOMATIC SUBDIVIDED-LEAF MUTANT IN SOLANUM TUBEROSUM

The environmental reaction of a somatic subdividedleaf mutant of the potato variety President was tested in two experiments. It was found that the mutant, besides the abnormal subdivision of leaf, deviates from the normal type by having taller stems and a greater assimilating leaf surface. Significant difference between the two types in yield could not be established. In a seed progeny of the subdivided-leaf mutant after open pollination, 29 out of 49 seedlings showed subdivision of leaf.
