We describe a nonlinear optical mechanism that leads to a decrease of the degree of (transverse) spatial coherence of a laser beam as a function of propagation distance. This prediction is in direct contrast with those of the van Cittert-Zernike theorem, which applies to propagation through a linear, homogeneous material. The mechanism by which coherence is lost is the growth of small phase irregularities initially present on the laser wave front. Hydropower development continues to grow worldwide in developed and developing countries. While the ecological and physical responses to dam construction have been well documented, translating this information into planning for hydropower development is extremely difficult. Very few studies have conducted environmental assessments to guide site-specific or widespread hydropower development. The application of three-dimensional (3D) heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy to the sequential assignment of the {sup 1}H NMR spectra of larger proteins is presented, using uniformly labeled ({sup 15}N)interleukin 1{beta}, a protein of 153 residues and molecular mass of 17.4 kDa, as an example. The two-dimensional (2D) 600-MHz spectra of interleukin 1{beta} are too complex for complete analysis, owing to extensive cross-peak overlap and chemical shift degeneracy. Synthesis of a multiple-peak spatial degree of coherence for imaging through absorbing media

The synthesis of a multiple-peak spatial degree of coherence is demonstrated. This degree of coherence enables us to scan different sample points on different altitudes simultaneously and thus decreases the acquisition time. The multipeak degree of coherence is also used for imaging through an absorbing layer with different thicknesses or different indices of refraction along the layer. All our experiments are performed with a quasi-monochromatic light source. Therefore problems of dispersion and inhomogeneous absorption are avoided. Our experimental results are presented.
