A new series of rare earth solid solutions of Y{sub x}Nd{sub 2-x}W{sub 3}O{sub 12} (x = 0.0-1.0, 1.6-2.0) were successfully synthesized by the solid-state method and studied by X-ray and neutron powder diffractions. The samples were found to crystallize in monoclinic with space group C2/c for x = 0.0-1.0 and in orthorhombic with space group Pnca for x = 1.6-2.0. Thermal properties of Y{sub x}Nd{sub 2-x}W{sub 3}O{sub 12} (x = 0.25 and 1.90) were studied with high-temperature XRD. Bi{sub 2}AE{sub 2}Co{sub 2}O{sub 8+δ} (AE represents alkaline earth), constructed by stacking of rock-salt Bi{sub 2}AE{sub 2}O{sub 4} and triangle CoO{sub 2} layers alternatively along c-axis, is one of promising thermoelectric oxides. The most impressive feature of Bi{sub 2}AE{sub 2}Co{sub 2}O{sub 8+δ}, as reported previously, is their electrical conductivity mainly lying along CoO{sub 2} plane, adjusting Bi{sub 2}AE{sub 2}O{sub 4} layer simultaneously manipulates both thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity. High magnetic ordering temperature in the perovskites Sr{sub 4-x}La{sub x}Fe{sub 3}ReO{sub 12} (x=0.0, 1.0, 2.0)

A series of perovskites Sr{sub 4-x}La{sub x}Fe{sub 3}ReO{sub 12} (x=0.0, 1.0, 2.0) has been prepared by wet chemistry methods. The structure analyses by powder X-ray and neutron diffraction and electron microscopy show that these compounds adopt simple perovskite structures without cation ordering over the B sites: tetragonal (I4/mcm) for x=0.0 and 1.0 and orthorhombic (Pbmn) for x=2.0. The oxidation states of the cations in the compound with x=0.0 appear to be Fe{sup 3+/4+} and Re{sup 7+} and decrease for both with La substitution as evidenced by X-ray absorption spectroscopy.
