The ability of forages to quickly resume aboveground growth after grazing is a trait that enables farmers to better manage their livestock for maximum profitability. Leaf removal impairs root growth. As a consequence of a deficient root system, shoot re-growth is inhibited leading to poor pasture performance. Despite the importance of roots for forage productivity, they have not been considered as breeding targets for improving grazing resilience due in large part to the lack of knowledge on the relationship between roots and aboveground biomass re-growth. Gamma rays, x rays, or EMS were applied to seeds of seven winter wheat varieties. Frequencies of induced mutations for mildew resistance were found between 0.01 to 0.16, for stripe rust resistance 0.01, and for leaf rust resistance 0.005 mutations per 100 M2 plants. Improved quality of grain occurred at 0.03 and improved yield of grain at 0.004 to 0.0079 frequencies. Mutation rates of diverse morphological mutations are summarized. All the useful mutations exercised a pleiotropic effect, or had concomitant deleterious mutations. (auth)
