Variable VHE gamma-ray emission from Markarian 501

The blazar Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) was observed at energies above 100 GeV with the MAGIC telescope from May through July 2005. The high sensitivity of the instrument enabled the determination of the flux and spectrum of the source on a night-by-night basis. Throughout our observational campaign, the flux from Mrk 501 was found to vary by an order of magnitude, and to be correlated with spectral changes. Multiwavelength observations of a flare from Markarian 501

We present multiwavelength observations of Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) during a flare in 1997 April. Evidence of correlated variability is seen in observations above 350 GeV taken with the Whipple Observatory very high energy (VHE) {gamma}-ray telescope, 50 keV{endash}10 MeV data from OSSE, and quicklook results from the All-Sky Monitor (ASM) of {ital RXTE}. EGRET did not detect Mrk 501. Short term optical correlations are not conclusive but the U-band flux observed with the 1.2m telescope of the Whipple Observatory was 10{percent} higher than in 1997 March.
