Hexagonal manganates RMnO{sub 3} (R=Y, Ho, Dy) have been recently shown to exhibit oxygen-storage capacities promising for three-way catalysts, air-separation, and related technologies. Here, we demonstrate that Ti substitution for Mn can be used to chemically tune the oxygen-breathing properties of these materials towards practical applications. Specifically, Y(Mn{sub 1−x}Ti{sub x})O{sub 3} solid solutions exhibit facile oxygen absorption/desorption via reversible Ti{sup 3+}↔Ti{sup 4+} and Mn{sup 3+}↔Mn{sup 4+} reactions already in ambient air at ≈400 °C and ≈250 °C, respectively. Local Structure of Ba(Ti Zr)O3 Perovskite-like Solid Solutions and its Relation to the Band-gap Behavior

Local structures in BaTi{sub 1-x}Zr{sub x}O{sub 3} solid solutions were analyzed using x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. We demonstrate that for low concentrations of Ti, isolated Ti atoms in the relatively large octahedral sites of the BaZrO{sub 3} lattice acquire centrosymmetric coordination with average Ti-O distances shorter than those in BaTiO{sub 3}. In contrast for higher concentrations of Ti, Ti atoms having one or more Ti as their B-site nearest neighbors undergo polar off-center displacements. Our DFT calculations confirm both effects. Nanocrystalline electrocatalytically active materials of chemical composition Ru{sub 1-x}Zn{sub x}O{sub 2} (0 < x < 0.3) were synthesized by freeze-drying technique. The diffraction patterns of the prepared samples corresponded to single-phase rutile type oxides.Local structure of the Ru{sub 1-x}Zn{sub x}O{sub 2} based on refinement of Ru K and Zn K edge EXAFS functions shows clustering of the Zn ions in the blocks with ilmenite structure intergrowing with Ru-rich rutile blocks.
