A laboratory evaluation of duplex annealed Ti--8Al-1Mo--1V sheet showed that 1850 deg F (5 min) and air cooled (AC) + 1100 deg F (8 hr) provided an optimum combination of room- and elevated-temperature tensile, sub-zero temperature notch tensile, and creep properties. Contamination was found to extend to a depth of 0.002 to 0.0025 in., which is entirely commensurate with finish grinding and/or pickling procedures being used. The process development for 3 advanced weldable Tibase sheet alloys possessing improved elevated-temperature properties, Ti--8Al--1Mo--1V, Ti--5Al -- 5Sn--5Zr, and Ti--7Al--12Zr is summarized. The more important properties of each composition are discussed. Optimum procedures and conditions were established by processing several sheets from one ingot of each composition and evaluating the effects of various rolling and annealing temperatures on mechanical properties. A study was made of the effect of cooling rate upon mechanical properties of the Ti--7A1--12Zr alloy. Test results showed that slow cooling irom 1650, 1550, 1525, and 1100 deg F developed low tensile ductility and high minimum bend radius (MBR) values, but no appreciable change in tensile or yield strength values. Removal of 0.006 in. appeared to restore tensile ductility but not MBR values. Additional work was performed on Ti-7Al-- 12Zr alloys. Testing of finished mill processed 0.020, 0.040, 0.060, and 0.080 in. gage sheet showed the sheets to be quite brittle. Additional total gage removal varying from 0.005 to 0.026 in. from these sheets was beneficial in making more ductile sheets but did not restore the original ductility as indicated by bend test results. These data suggest the existence of metallurgical instability in the alloy arising from mill processing.
