High-intensity wildfires alter the chemical composition of organic matter, which is expected to be distinctly different from low-intensity prescribed fires. In this study, we used pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), in conjunction with solid-state ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, to assess chemical alterations from three wildfires and a long-term frequent prescribed fire site. Our results showed that black ash formed under moderate intensity burns contained less aromatic (ArH), polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), and nitrogen-containing compounds (Ntg) but more lignin (LgC) and phenol compounds (PhC), compared to white ash formed under high intensity burns. The use of CuO oxidation in combination with isotope ratio monitoring GC-MS to characterize lignins from vascular plant tissues and sedimentary samples

A variety of phenolic standards were analyzed as trimethylsilyl derivatives by irm-GC-MS and their {gamma}{sup 13}C values (after correcting for derivative carbons) found to be within 1{per_thousand} of the isotopic compositions determined by off-line combustion. CuO oxidation products from several isolated lignins were analyzed by irm-GC-MS and their {gamma}{sup 13}C values determined to be representative of the isotopic composition of their respective polymeric precursors. Soluble polylabdanoids isolated by sequential solvent extraction have been characterized by liquid-state {sup 13}C- and {sup 1}H NMR and {sup 13}C-{sup 1}H HMQC (heteronuclear correlation) NMR spectroscopy in addition to solid-state NMR and Py-GC-MS techniques. Two Holocene resins originating from Santander, Colombia and Mombasa, Kenya were analyzed. Soluble polymers were isolated by extraction with a 1:1 (v/v) methylene chloride-methanol mixture following sequential extractions with methylene chloride and methanol.
