Thermal decompositions of the oxalates of the heavy rare earth metals and of yttrium were carried out on a Stanton thermobalance. These oxalates on precipitation and drying at 110 deg C for six hours, gave the trihydrates, which were used in the decomposition studies. Dihydrates, stable in the temperature range 230 to 330 deg C, were formed before complete dehydration. Maximum decomposition was found to take place between 400 to 460 deg C. Weight levels corresponding to oxide formation were obtained in the temperature range 680 to 700 deg C without any indication of formation of intermediate products. (auth)

Yttrium-succinates coordination polymers: Hydrothermal synthesis, crystal structure and thermal decomposition

New polymeric yttrium-succinates, Y{sub 2}(C{sub 4}H{sub 4}O{sub 4}){sub 3}(H{sub 2}O){sub 4}.6H{sub 2}O and Y{sub 2}(C{sub 4}H{sub 4}O{sub 4}){sub 3}(H{sub 2}O){sub 2}, have been synthesized, and their structures (solved by single crystal XRD) are compared with that of Y{sub 2}(C{sub 4}H{sub 4}O{sub 4}){sub 3}(H{sub 2}O){sub 2}.H{sub 2}O. Yttrium oxalate may be dehydrated in vacuum at a temperature as low as 260 deg , and decomposition of the oxalate itself begins upon completion of dehydration. In vacuum as well as in an open furnace, various carbonato-oxalates and oxycarbonates are formed in the temperature range 300 to 420 deg . Disproportionation of the carbon monoxide originating from the initial decomposition of the oxalate takes place to an extent of nearly 60%.
