Reuse of treated municipal wastewater as makeup to circulating cooling systems

Economic, energy, and environmental benefits of reusing treated municipal wastewater for industrial cooling are discussed. Makeup waters that have been successfully used in various nations fall in the range 10-30 mg/l BOD, 30-50 mg/l phosphate, 1000-1500 mg/l total dissolved solids and 30-70 mg/l ammonia. Major problems are phosphate scale and biological fouling. Usual wastewater treatments are lime clarification and chlorination. Most of the industrial users of recycled wastewater are power plants, but industries using carbon-steel heat exchangers have also used treated wastewater for industrial cooling. A methodology is presented to calculate the total combined cost (TCC) of water sourcing, water treatment and condenser fouling in the recirculating cooling systems of thermoelectric power plants.
