Biomass production and nutrient responses of ponderosa pine to long-term elevated CO/sub 2/ concentrations

Ponderosa pine saplings and seedlings were continuously exposed to elevated CO/sub 2/ concentrations of ambient, and ambient +75, +150, and +300 ppm in open-top chambers for 27 months. Saplings responded by reducing above ground biomass production. Although potassium concentration in both saplings and seedlings diminished as CO/sub 2/ concentration increased, no nutrients appeared to become limiting to growth as a result of elevated CO/sub 2/. Concentrations of Ca, Mg, and Zn in the saplings at different concentrations of CO/sub 2/ mirrored root densitites, indicating that an increase in root density at +150 ppm may account for greater nutrient concentrations observedmore » in that tree. 17 refs., 6 figs.« less

Understanding how photosynthetic capacity acclimates to elevated CO{sub 2} concentrations is vital in predicting the response of important grassland species such as Trifolium repens. Previous studies of acclimatization have been carried out in artificial experimental conditions, such as acrylic greenhouses or controlled environment chambers. Will a breakdown in nutrient cycling limit the long-term response of forested systems to elevated CO[sub 2] and climate change

Rising atmospheric CO[sub 2] and climate change may have dramatic effects of forested systems. Under elevated CO[sub 2] most forest species increase their allocation of C to roots to acquire additional resources for growth. A large portion of photosynthate is released belowground through root turnover, root exudates, or symbiotic exchange. This injection of C belowground may stimulate the mineralization of soil organic matter and mineral weathering; increasing nutrient availability and plant growth in the short-term.
