Rapid solidification (RS) processing, as a production method, offers a variety of unique properties based on far-from-equilibrium microstructures obtained through rapid cooling rates. In this study, we seek to investigate the microstructures and properties of a novel Al-alloy specifically designed for high temperature mechanical stability. Synthesis of, AlFe{sub 11.4}Si{sub 1.8}V{sub 1.6}Mn{sub 0.9} (wt.%), was performed by two approaches: rotating cup atomization (“shot”) and melt spinning (“flake”). Microstructures and mechanical properties of rapidly solidified high strength Al-Ni based alloys

Several different rapidly solidified high strength Al-Ni based alloys with tensile strengths greater than 800 MPa and large Young`s moduli have been developed. These alloys include Al-Ni-M (M = Zr, Ti), Al-Ni-Re (RE = Y, Ce), Al-Ni-Re-M, Al-Ni-Cu-M and Al-Ni-Cu-M-RE alloys. Some samples have tensile strengths as high as 1,000 MPa. The mechanical properties, phase structures and microstructures of these alloys are presented. The function of elements such as Zr, Ti, Cu, Ce and Y in Al-Ni based alloys is discussed.

Investigation of the effect of powder particle size distribution on the powder microstructure and mechanical properties of consolidated material made from a rapidly solidified Al-Fe-Ce alloy powder; Part 2: Mechanical properties

In the present investigation, the mechanical properties of an elevated temperature aluminum alloy exhibiting two different size distributions was evaluated after extrusion processing at 400 C. The alloy powder with a target composition of Al-8 wt.% Fe-4 wt.% Ce was produced under different atomizing conditions. The consolidation process using extrusion was found to be more beneficial for finer powder size distribution in terms of elevated temperature mechanical properties because of the retention of a more desirable metastable phase.

In the present investigation a potential aerospace aluminum alloy made from atomized powder was subjected to microstructural investigation. Samples exhibiting varied powder size distribution, due to differences in atomizing conditions employed in powder production, were studied. The alloy having a target composition of Al-8 wt.% Fe-4wt.%Ce was characterized using transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry. The fine powder size distribution was found to be more desirable from the mechanical properties point of view due to the retention of metastable phases.
