We utilize public data from the CMS experiment to study the two-prong substructure of jets. The CMS open data are based on 31.8 pb^-1 of 7 TeV proton-proton collisions recorded at the Large Hadron Collider in 2010, yielding a sample of 768,687 events containing a high-quality central jet with transverse momentum larger than 85 GeV. Using CMS’s particle flow reconstruction algorithm to obtain jet constituents, we extract the two-prong substructure of the leading jet using soft-drop declustering. There exist full leading-order-in-{alpha}{sub s} numerical calculations of the rates for massless quarks and gluons to split and join in the background of a quark-gluon plasma through hard, nearly collinear bremsstrahlung and inverse bremsstrahlung. In the limit of partons with very high energy E, where the physics is dominated by the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect, there are also analytic leading-log calculations of these rates, where the logarithm is ln(E/T). Jet splitting function in the vacuum and QCD medium

The two-prong structure related to the leading subjets inside a reconstructed jet opens new avenues toward precision constraints on the in-medium modification of parton showers. In this talk, we present the first resummed calculation of the soft-dropped groomed momentum sharing distribution, or the jet splitting function, in heavy-ion collisions for both light jets and heavy flavor tagged jets. Existing light jet splitting function data from the STAR experiment at RHIC and the CMS experiment at LHC can be understood in the unified framework of soft-collinear effective theory with Glauber gluon interactions.
