Stilbenes are diphenyl ethene compounds produced naturally in a wide variety of plant species and some bacteria. Stilbenes are also derived from lignin during kraft pulping. Stilbene cleavage oxygenases (SCOs) cleave the central double bond of stilbenes, forming two phenolic aldehydes. Here in this paper, we report the structure of an SCO. The X-ray structure of NOV1 from Novosphingobium aromaticivorans was determined in complex with its substrate resveratrol (1.89 Å), its product vanillin (1.75 Å), and without any bound ligand (1.61 Å). Correlation between Active Center Structure and Enhanced Dioxygen Binding in Co(salen) Nanoparticles: Characterization by In Situ Infrared, Raman, and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopies

The structure and ligand environment of Co(salen) nanoparticles and unprocessed Co(salen) have been determined by the combined application of infrared, Raman, X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopies, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments before and during interaction with O2. The Co(salen) nanoparticles were prepared by the precipitation with compressed antisolvent (PCA) technique using commercially obtained Co(salen) [denoted as unprocessed Co(salen)] as the parent compound. Chemistry and structural studies on the dioxygen-binding copper-1,2-dimethylimidazole system

Studies of copper complexes with the 1,2-dimethylimidazole (Me[sub 2]im) system have provided insights into the factors which control dioxygen (O[sub 2]) binding and activation in imidazole (histidine) ligated copper complexes and proteins. A two-coordinate complex [Cu(Me[sub 2]im)[sub 2]](PF[sub 6]) (1(PF[sub 6])) is formed by the reaction of 1,2-dimethylimidazole with [Cu(CH[sub 3]CN)[sub 4]](PF[sub 6]). Solid state lithium cyanocobaltates with high capacity for reversible dioxygen binding: Synthesis, reactivity, and structures

Lithium pentacyanocobaltate coordination polymers with the formulas Li{sub 3}[Co(CN){sub 5}].4DMF (1, DMF = N, N-dimethylformamide) and Li{sub 3}[Co(CN){sub 5}].2DMF (2) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Both compounds react reversibly with O{sub 2}, forming 1:1 superoxo complexes. Compound 2 reacts more rapidly and has the highest reported capacity for a solid O{sub 2} carrier (55 std cm{sup 3}/g). In contrast to previously reported dioxygen complexes of cyanocobaltates, the novel ability of 1 and 2 to react reversibly with O{sub 2} is made possible by the interaction of Li cations with the nucleophilic N atoms of the cyanide ligands.
