We established 3 specific tasks as follows: Task 1 - Investigate the MHD activity during the current ramp-up phase with shaped plasmas; Task 2 - Develop a theoretical model that may show the hollowness dependent instability; Task 3 - Explore the beta-limiting instabilities. DoE Grant DE-SC0016409 (Disruption Prediction and Avoidance in High Beta Long Pulse KSTAR Plasmas) supported a collaboration among Columbia University, the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), and the Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC) at MIT to conduct research on the KSTAR tokamak at the National Fusion Research Institute (NFRI) in Korea to improve predictive capability for disruptions in tokamaks. Global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability limits in the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) have increased significantly recently due to a combination of device and operational improvements. First, more routine H-mode operation with broadened pressure profiles allows access to higher normalized β and lower internal inductance. Second, the correction of a poloidal field coil induced error-field has largely eliminated locked tearing modes during normal operation and increased the maximum achievable β. As a result of these improvements, peak β values have reached (not simultaneously) β_T = 35%, β_N = 6.4, < β_N > = 4.5, β_N/l_i = 10, and β_P = 1.4.more »« less

Modeling and control of plasma rotation for NSTX using neoclassical toroidal viscosity and neutral beam injection

A model-based feedback system is presented to control plasma rotation in a magnetically confined toroidal fusion device, to maintain plasma stability for long-pulse operation. This research uses experimental measurements from the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) and is aimed at controlling plasma rotation using two different types of actuation: momentum from injected neutral beams and neoclassical toroidal viscosity generated by three-dimensional applied magnetic fields.
