Weak lensing measurement of the mass–richness relation of SDSS redMaPPer clusters

Title: Weak lensing measurement of the mass–richness relation of SDSS redMaPPer clusters

Abstract

We perform a measurement of the mass–richness relation of the redMaPPer galaxy cluster catalogue using weak lensing data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We have carefully characterized a broad range of systematic uncertainties, including shear calibration errors, photo-z biases, dilution by member galaxies, source obscuration, magnification bias, incorrect assumptions about cluster mass profiles, cluster centring, halo triaxiality and projection effects. We also compare measurements of the lensing signal from two independently produced shear and photometric redshift catalogues to characterize systematic errors in the lensing signal itself. Using a sample of 5570 clusters from 0.1 ≤ z ≤ 0.33, the normalization of our power-law mass versus λ relation is log10[M200m/h^-1 M⊙] = 14.344 ± 0.021 (statistical) ±0.023 (systematic) at a richness λ = 40, a 7 per cent calibration uncertainty, with a power-law index of 1.33+0.09-0.10 (1σ). The detailed systematics characterization in this work renders it the definitive weak lensing mass calibration for SDSS redMaPPer clusters at this time.

We present the weak-lensing mass calibration of the stellar-mass-based μ_{more » $$\star$$} mass proxy for redMaPPer galaxy clusters in the Dark Energy Survey Year 1. For the first time, we are able to perform a calibration of μ_$$\star$$ at high redshifts, z > 0.33. In a blinded analysis, we use ~6000 clusters split into 12 subsets spanning the ranges 0.1 ≤ z < 0.65 and μ$$\star$$ up to $${\sim} 5.5 \times 10^{13} \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$$, and infer the average masses of these subsets through modelling of their stacked weak-lensing signal. In our model, we account for the following sources of systematic uncertainty: shear measurement and photometric redshift errors, miscentring, cluster-member contamination of the source sample, deviations from the Navarro–Frenk–White halo profile, halo triaxiality, and projection effects. We use the inferred masses to estimate the joint mass–μ_$$\star$$–z scaling relation given by $$\langle M_{200c} | \mu _{\star },z \rangle = M_0 (\mu _{\star }/5.16\times 10^{12} \, \mathrm{M_{\odot }})^{F_{\mu _{\star }}} ((1+z)/1.35)^{G_z}$$. We find $$M_0= (1.14 \pm 0.07) \times 10^{14} \, \mathrm{M_{\odot }}$$ with $$F_{\mu _{\star }}= 0.76 \pm 0.06$$ and Gz = -1.14 ± 0.37. Weak-lensing calibration of a stellar mass-based mass proxy for redMaPPer and Voronoi Tessellation clusters in SDSS Stripe 82

Here, we present the first weak lensing calibration of μ*, a new galaxy cluster mass proxy corresponding to the total stellar mass of red and blue members, in two cluster samples selected from the SDSS Stripe 82 data: 230 red-sequence Matched-filter Probabilistic Percolation (redMaPPer) clusters at redshift 0.1 ≤ z < 0.33 and 136 Voronoi Tessellation (VT) clusters at 0.1 ≤ z < 0.6. We use the CS82 shear catalogue and stack the clusters in μ* bins to measure a mass-observable power-law relation. Dark Energy Survey Year 1 results: weak lensing mass calibration of redMaPPer galaxy clusters

We constrain the mass-richness scaling relation of redMaPPer galaxy clusters identified in the Dark Energy Survey Year 1 data using weak gravitational lensing. We split clusters into 4 x 3 bins of richness lambda and redshift z for lambda >= 20 and 0.2 <= z <= 0.65 and measure the mean masses of these bins using their stacked weak lensing signal. By modelling the scaling relation as M-200m|lambda, M-0(lambda/40)(F)((1 + /1.35)(G), we constrain the normalization of the scaling relation at the 5.0 per cent level, finding M-0 = [3.081 +/- 0.075(stat) +/- 0.133(sys)] center dot 10(14) M-aS (TM) at lambdamore »« less

Cross-correlation redshift calibration without spectroscopic calibration samples in DES Science Verification Data

Galaxy cross-correlations with high-fidelity redshift samples hold the potential to precisely calibrate systematic photometric redshift uncertainties arising from the unavailability of complete and representative training and validation samples of galaxies. However, application of this technique in the Dark Energy Survey (DES) is hampered by the relatively low number density, small area, and modest redshift overlap between photometric and spectroscopic samples. We propose instead using photometric catalogues with reliable photometric redshifts for photo-z calibration via cross-correlations.
