Evolution of structure and magnetism across the metal-insulator transition in the pyrochlore iridate ${({Nd}_{1 - x} {Ca}_{x})}_{2} {Ir}_{2} O_{7}$

We report on the evolution of the thermal metal-insulator transition in polycrystalline samples of Nd₂Ir₂O₇ upon hole doping via substitution of Ca²⁺ for Nd³⁺. Ca substitution mediates a filling-controlled Mott-like transition with minimal resolvable structural changes and without altering site symmetry. Local structure confirms that Ca substitution does not result in local chemical phase separation, and absorption spectroscopy establishes that Ir cations maintain a spin-orbit entangled electronic configuration. The metal-insulator transition coincides with antiferromagnetic ordering on the Ir sublattice for all measured samples, and both decrease in onset temperature with Ca content. Manganese-induced magnetic symmetry breaking and its correlation with the metal-insulator transition in bilayered $S r_{3} {(R u_{1 - x} M n_{x})}_{2} O_{7}$

Bilayered Sr3Ru2O7 is an unusual metamagnetic metal with inherently antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations. Partial substitution of Ru by Mn results in the establishment of a metal-insulator transition (MIT) at TMIT and AFM ordering at TM in Sr3(Ru1-xMnx)2O7. Using elastic neutron scattering, we investigated the effect of Mn doping on the magnetic structure, in-plane magnetic correlation lengths and their correlation to the MIT in Sr3(Ru1-xMnx)2O7 (x=0.06 and 0.12). With the increase of Mn doping (x) from 0.06 to 0.12 or the decrease of temperatures for x=0.12, an evolution from an in-plane short-range to long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state occurs.more »« less
