Product liquids and organic concentrates obtained from aqueous effluents are chemically fractionated and analyzed chromatographically. Fractions are subjected to biological testing to determine their toxic and mutagenic potentials; those fractions found to be active are further analyzed in order to focus on specific compounds which may produce the biological activity. Analytical techniques include GLC chromatography with sulfur and nitrogen selective detectors; chemical identifications are made from cochromatographic and GC-MS data. The etherification of biomass-based alcohols with various linear {alpha}-olefins under solvent-free conditions was followed in a space- and time-resolved manner on 9 {micro}m large H-Beta zeolite crystals by confocal fluorescence microscopy. This allowed us to visualize the interaction with the substrate and distribution of the coke products into the catalyst at the level of an individual zeolite crystal during the etherification process. Conversion of gaseous molecular tritium to tritiated water in biological systems. [Role of soil microorganisms]

The exposure of field soils to molecular tritium under laboratory conditions showed that molecular tritium was converted to tritiated water within the soil column. Soil conditions which promoted active metabolism of soil microorganisms also increased the amount of tritium found as tritiated water. Soil sterilization greatly decreased the conversion of molecular tritium, while reinnoculation with soil microorganisms restored the conversion ability of the soil. On the basis of these results, we conclude that molecular tritium is converted to tritiated water in soil through the metabolic action of soil microorganisms.
