The components of a reversible Tc(III/II) redox couple have been characterized by single-crystal x-ray analysis and the crystal parameters are reported. Oxidation of the Tc(II) complex to the Tc(III) form causes a shortening of the Tc-Cl bond by 0.105 (2) /angstrom/, consistent with the ionic nature of this interaction. Conversely, oxidation from Tc(II) to Tc(III) causes a lengthening of the Tc-P bond by 0.072 (2) /angstrom/, consistent with the domination of this interaction by ..pi..-back-bonding from Tc to P. The reaction of trans-RuCl[sub 2](dppe)[sub 2] (1), with AgBF[sub 4] in tetrahydrofuran leads to abstraction of one of the halide ligands to produce the trigonal-bipyrimidal complex. [RuCl(dppe)[sub 2]]BF[sub 4] (2). Both products are characterized by [sup 31]P NMR spectroscopy and their crystal structures determined. For the coordinatively unsaturated trigonal-bipyramidal complex (2), the authors found no evidence for the presence of more than one species or fluxional behaviour at room temperature in the [sup 31]P NMR spectrum. Carbon monoxide activation has been a problem of interest to chemists for a long time. This interest stems from a desire to find feedstocks other than petroleum for use in producing chemicals and fuels. This study examines the series of complexes cis- and trans-(IrX(CO)(dppe)/sub 2/)/sup 2 +/ (X = H, Cl, Br) for activation toward nucleophilic attack at the coordinated CO.
