Accumulation rates of biogenous silica and terrigenous detritus in late Miocene-early Pliocene Santa Maria basin, California

The upper-Miocene-lower Pliocene laminated to massive diatomaceous strata of the Santa Maria basin encompass portions of the Monterey and overlying conformable to nonconformable Sisquoc Formations and record the continued accumulation of admixed siliceous (mostly diatoms) and terrigenous (silt and clay) components in a Neogene borderland basin. Lithologies, which vary from diatomite to diatomaceous mudstone, are the result of fluctuations in slope-accumulating silica and terrigenous debris. All-Optical Radiation Reaction at $1 0^{21} W / {cm}^{2}$

By using full-scale 3D particle-in-cell simulations we show that the radiation reaction dominated regime can be reached in an all optical configuration through the collision of a ~1 GeV laser wakefield accelerated (LWFA) electron bunch with a counter propagating laser pulse. In this configuration radiation reaction significantly reduces the energy of the particle bunch, thus providing clear experimental signatures for the process with currently available lasers. We also show that the transition between classical and quantum radiation reaction could be investigated in the same configuration with laser intensities of 10²⁴W/cm².

Origin of tuff deposits in the lower Miocene Lospe Formation, Santa Maria basin, California

The Lospe Formation contains at least five mappable tuff units (17-18 Ma) which were erupted during initial stages of Neogene Santa Maria basin subsidence. Individual tuff units are lenticular, as much as 15-20 m thick, and 1-3 km wide; they were deposited predominantly in a lacustrine setting. Subaqueous deposition is indicated by facies of the interbedded nonvolcanic Lospe Formation. The lowermost Lospe Tuff unit, however, which overlies Jurassic basement, is interpreted as a subaerial deposit. Each subaqueous tuff unit contains two or more eruption units.
