Integration and operation of a sUAS-based multi-modal imaging payload equipped with a novel communication system enabling autonomous platform control

Oak Ridge National Laboratory presents a new UAS-mounted multi-modal imaging payload containing five sensors. We have integrated several distinct commercially available sensors onto a large Class-1 autonomous quadcopter aircraft: a LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scanner, a hyperspectral pushbroom sensor, a multispectral camera, a longwave infrared thermal camera, and an RGB camera. The system integrates our proprietary Multi-modal Autonomous Vehicle Network (MAVNet) and communication system, allowing autonomous control via multiple communication networks. Using one common Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and inertial navigation system (INS/GPS), imagery from all sensors are accurately and precisely geolocated and co-registered.

Tracking elemental changes in an ischemic stroke model with X-ray fluorescence imaging

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability in adults and a leading cause of death in developed nations. The cascade of cellular events and signalling that occur after cerebral ischemia are complex, however, analyzing global element markers of metabolic state affords the means to monitor stroke severity, status of injury, and recovery. These markers provide a multi-parameter method for assessing changes through the post-stroke time course. The Urban Observatory: A Multi-Modal Imaging Platform for the Study of Dynamics in Complex Urban Systems

We describe an “Urban Observatory” facility designed for the study of complex urban systems via persistent, synoptic, and granular imaging of dynamical processes in cities. An initial deployment of the facility has been demonstrated in New York City and consists of a suite of imaging systems—both broadband and hyperspectral—sensitive to wavelengths from the visible (∼400 nm) to the infrared (∼13 micron) operating at cadences of ∼0.01–30 Hz (characteristically ∼0.1 Hz). Positron imaging in ischemic stroke disease using compounds labeled with oxygen 15. Initial results of clinicophysiologic correlations

Initial results in over 50 patients with stroke suggest that positron images made during continuous inhalation of carbon dioxide labeled with oxygen 15 and molecular oxygen labeled with oxygen 15 provide data on tissue function that may be relevant to acute stroke management. Five cases illustrate the following findings: 15O-activity patterns observed in areas of ischemic injury or infarction are what one would expect if the 15O distributions represented physiologic functions, such as cerebral blood flow and metabolism. PET imaging of cerebral perfusion and oxygen consumption in acute ischemic stroke: Relation to outcome

The authors used positron emission tomography (PET) to assess the relation between combined imaging of cerebral blood flow and oxygen consumption 5-18 h after first middle cerebral artery (MCA) stroke and neurological outcome at 2 months. All 18 patients could be classified into three visually defined PET patterns of perfusion and oxygen consumption changes. Pattern 1 suggested extensive irreversible damage and was consistently associated with poor outcome. Pattern 2 suggested continuing ischemia and was associated with variable outcome. Pattern 3 with hyperperfusion and little or no metabolic alteration, was associated with excellent recovery, which suggests that early reperfusion is beneficial.more »« less
