Worldwide late Pleistocene terrestrial mammal faunas are characterized by stratigraphic associations of species that now have exclusive geographic ranges. These have been interpreted as either taphonomically mixed or representative of communities that no longer exist. Accelerator mass spectrometry {sup 14}C dates (n = 60) on single bones of stratigraphically associated fossil micromammals from two American and two Russian sites document for the first time that currently allopatric mammals occurred together between 12,000 and 22,000 yr B.P. on two continents. Junction detectors were used for studying alpha spectra obtained by reactions (p, alpha ), the protons being produced by an electrostatic accelerator ( ub p/ varying from 1OO to 600 kev). Difficulties were encountered arising from parasitic noise from the accelerator and from the distance (60 meters) between detectors and electronic equipment. Resolution of the counter were found to be 0.6% with alpha from Po/sup 210/ and 1.2% with alpha (5, 8 Mev) from the reaction B/sup 11/(p, alpha /sub 0/). (auth)
