The magnetic properties of electron-doped perovskite manganites, (Gd{sub x}Ca{sub y}Sr{sub 1-x-y})MnO{sub 3} (x=0.08 and 0.05, 0.1{<=}y<1), were investigated as a function of the average ionic radius of the A-site cations (i.e., Gd, Ca and Sr), <r{sub A}>using polycrystalline samples. For the samples with x=0.08, as y increased from 0, the low temperature phase changed from an antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) to a ferromagnetic metal (FM) at y{approx}0.35 which corresponds to <r{sub A}>=1.25 A. Polycrystalline samples of the series of double perovskites Sr{sub 2−x}La{sub x}FeIrO{sub 6} were synthesized. Their structural, electronic and magnetic properties were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and electrical resistivity experiments. The compounds crystallize in a monoclinic structure and were fitted in space group P2{sub 1}/n, with a significant degree of Fe/Ir cationic disorder. As in Ca{sub 2−x}La{sub x}FeIrO{sub 6} the Sr-based system seems to evolve from an antiferromagnetic ground state for the end members (x=0.0 and x=2.0) to a ferrimagnetic order in the intermediate regions (x∼1). Effects of chemical pressure on the magnetic ground states of the osmate double perovskites SrCaCoOs₆ and Ca₂CoOsO₆

The magnetic ground state in the double perovskite system Sr_2-xCa_xCoOsO₆ changes from an antiferromagnet (x=0), to a spin glass (x=1), to a ferrimagnet (x=2) as the Ca content increases. Moreover, this crossover is driven by chemical pressure effects that control the relative strength of magnetic exchange interactions. The synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetism of SrCaCoOsO₆ and Ca₂CoOsO₆ are investigated and compared with Sr₂CoOsO₆. Both compounds adopt a monoclinic crystal structure with rock-salt ordering of Co²⁺ and Os⁶⁺ and a^-a^-b⁺ octahedral tilting, but the average Co–O–Os bond angle evolves from 158.0(3) in SrCaCoOsO₆ to 150.54(9)° in Ca₂CoOsO₆ as the smaller Ca²+more »« less
