The long-time (>100 hours of operation) flux was measured for a set of tests where slurry waste simulant was separated and continuously recycled in a stainless steel crossflow filter. The tests were conducted at various constant axial velocities and transmembrane pressures. In all five tests, the flux continued to decay at long times and did not reach a steady-state. The long-time slope of the decay was unaffected by the axial velocity, and larger transmembrane pressure resulted in a larger slope. Abstract Treatment processes have been proposed that will utilize crossflow filtration to concentrate sludge waste streams at the Department of Energy's Hanford Site. Challenges associated with solid–liquid separation of the waste streams drive a necessary evaluation of available Hanford high level waste (HLW) filtration data. Limiting flux conditions during crossflow filtration are elucidated with the formation of a cake layer on the membrane surface. A mass transfer coefficient between the gel and bulk concentrations plays a critical role in determining filter flux. New tanks for storage of low level radioactive wastes will be constructed at the Savannah River Site (SRS) of AISI Type 304L stainless steel (304L). The presence of chlorides and fluorides in the wastes may induce Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) in 304L. Constant Extension Rate Tests (CERT) were performed to determine the susceptibility of 304L to SCC in simulated wastes. In five of the six tests conducted thus far 304L was not susceptible to SCC in the simulated waste environments.
