In synthetic ecology, a nascent offshoot of synthetic biology, scientists aim to design and construct microbial communities with desirable properties. Such mixed populations of microorganisms can simultaneously perform otherwise incompatible functions. Compared with individual organisms, they can also better resist losses in function as a result of environmental perturbation or invasion by other species. Synthetic ecology may thus be a promising approach for developing robust, stable biotechnological processes, such as the conversion of cellulosic biomass to biofuels. However, achieving this will require detailed knowledge of the principles that guide the structure and function of microbial communities.

Dimetrodon performance summary: energy systems and the evolution of an ecological community design process

Technical Report

This final report documents the process utilized to fulfill the requirements of the grant award, evaluates the performance of the integrated energy systems at Dimetrodon, and is intended to serve as a guide to other individuals or groups undertaking such community projects utilizing integrated renewable energy systems in an ecological context. The work covered in the grant includes the construction of a 1000 square foot site-built Solaroll solar collector; the erection of a 70 foot tower for a previously purchased 32 volt 1800 watt Jacobs wind generator and the installation of a monitoring system. Urban impacts on fish communities in the Grand River system: Use of a functional approach (ecological community analysis) to identify the cause of impacts

Fish communities in two tributaries (Laurel Creek, Canagagigue Creek) to the Grand River (Ontario) were surveyed and described by (1) taxonomic composition, and (2) composition in terms of functional ecological niches (Ecological Community Analysis [ECA]). Ecological niches included descriptions of feeding strategies, preferred habitats, and tolerances to temperature, turbidity and chlorine. An interpretive framework is proposed that would provide an objective means of determining the cause of changes in a fish community in the presence of non-point source impacts.
