Here, we report the crystal field levels of several newly discovered rare-earth kagome compounds: Nd₃Sb₃Mg₂O₁₄, Nd₃Sb₃Zn₂O₁₄, and Pr₃Sb₃Mg₂O₁₄. We determine the crystal electric field (CEF) Hamiltonian by fitting to neutron scattering data using a point charge Hamiltonian as an intermediate fitting step. The fitted Hamiltonians accurately reproduce bulk susceptibility measurements, and the results indicate easy-axis ground-state doublets for Nd₃Sb₃Mg₂O₁₄ and Nd₃Sb₃Zn₂O₁₄ and a singlet ground state for Pr₃Sb₃Mg₂O₁₄. These results provide the groundwork for future investigations of these compounds and a template for CEF analysis of other low-symmetry materials.

Physical properties of single crystalline $R {Mg}_{2} {Cu}_{9}$ $(R = Y, Ce - Nd, Gd - Dy, Yb)$ and the search for in-plane magnetic anisotropy in hexagonal systems

Single crystals of RMg₂Cu₉ (R=Y, Ce-Nd, Gd-Dy, Yb) were grown using a high-temperature solution growth technique and were characterized by measurements of room-temperature x-ray diffraction, temperature-dependent specific heat, and temperature- and field-dependent resistivity and anisotropic magnetization. YMg₂Cu₉ is a non-local-moment-bearing metal with an electronic specific heat coefficient, γ ~ 15 mJ/mol K². Yb is divalent and basically non-moment-bearing in YbMg2Cu9. Ce is trivalent in CeMg₂Cu₉ with two magnetic transitions being observed at 2.1 K and 1.5 K. PrMg₂Cu₉ does not exhibit any magnetic phase transition down to 0.5 K. Spin-ice materials are canonical examples of frustration, and Ising spins in a transverse magnetic field are the simplest many-body model of quantum tunneling. Here, we show that the tripod-kagome lattice material Ho3Mg2Sb3O14 unites an icelike magnetic degeneracy with quantum-tunneling terms generated by an intrinsic splitting of the Ho3+ ground-state doublet, which is further coupled to a nuclear spin bath. Using neutron scattering and thermodynamic experiments, we observe a symmetry-breaking transition at T∗≈0.32 K to a remarkable state with three peculiarities: a concurrent recovery of magnetic entropy associatedmore »« less
