Expulsion of hydrocarbons from source rocks containing hydrogenlean (type III) kerogen is most likely to take place in solution within the gas phase. This mode of migration overcomes problems of low permeability for liquids in the source shales. During this process of expulsion oil will become strongly fractionated and skewed toward lower molecular weight hydrocarbons. The authors examine the fractionation of carbon isotopes of HC during migration in the gas phase. Separation of carbon isotopes is observed both for methane and liquid HC. They show the presence of a relation between the change in the isotope compositions of the discharged gas solution and the isotopic composition of the carbon, depending on the amount of solution passed. This experimental investigation of the migration of a gas solution through slightly permeable rocks at high pressures revealed that it is accompanied by a chromatographic separation of the components and fractionation of the carbon isotopes of hydrocarbons. Carbon isotope separation is characteristic of methane (up to 1%) and liquid hydrocarbons (up to 0.3%). Fractionation of carbon isotopes of hydrocarbons is directly related to the degree of chromatographic separation of the gas solution.
