The LiNi_0.5Mn_1.5O₄ spinel is an appealing cathode material for next generation rechargeable Li-ion batteries due to its high operating voltage of ~4.7 V (vs Li/Li⁺). Although it is widely believed that the full range of electrochemical cycling involves the redox of Ni(II)/(IV), it has not been experimentally clarified whether Ni(III) exists as the intermediate state or a double-electron transfer takes place. Here, combined with theoretical calculations, we show unambiguous spectroscopic evidence of the Ni(III) state when the LiNi_0.5Mn_1.5O₄ electrode is half charged. Electron-transfer reactions of excited states: direct evidence for reduction of the charge-transfer excited state of tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II)

Results of flash-photolysis experiments of the quenching of the charge-transfer excited state of tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) (*Ru(bpy)/sub 3//sup 2 +/) are presented that provide direct evidence for its reduction. The system Eu/sup II/--Ru(bpy)/sub 3//sup 2 +/ was studied in the flash-photolysis experiments. The results not only provide ample evidence that the charge-transfer excited state of the Ru(bpy)/sub 3//sup 2 +/ readily undergoes both oxidation and reduction as had been predicted but also allows the estimation that disproportionation of the excited state according to the equation, 2*Ru(bpy)/sub 3/ /sup 2 +/ reversible Ru(bpy)/sub 3//sup 3 +/ + Ru(bpy)/sub 3//sup +/ is favored bymore » approximately 1.7V.
