We study texture evolution of alpha-uranium (α-U) during plane strain compression and uniaxial compression to high strains at different temperatures. We combine a multiscale polycrystal constitutive model and detailed analysis of texture data to uncover the slip and twinning modes responsible for the formation of individual texture components. The analysis indicates that during plane strain compression, floor slip (001)[100] results in the formation of two pronounced {001}{001} texture peaks tilted 10–15° away from the normal toward the rolling direction. Cylindrical specimens of commercial pure titanium have been compressed at strain rates in the range of 0.1 to 100 s[sup [minus]1] and temperatures in the range of 25 C to 400 C. At strain rates of 10 and 100 s[sup [minus]1], the specimens exhibited adiabatic shear bands. At lower strain rates, the material deformed in an inhomogeneous fashion. Crystallographic texture development and hardening characteristics of a hot-rolled, low-carbon steel sheet due to cold rolling were investigated by idealizing the cold rolling process as plane-strain compression. The starting anisotropy of the test material was characterized by examination of the grain structure by optical microscopy and the preferred crystal orientation distribution by x-ray diffraction. Various heat treatments were used in an effort to remove the initial deformation texture resulting from hot rolling.
