Anomalously deep polarization in SrTiO3 (001) interfaced with an epitaxial ultrathin manganite film

Using atomically-resolved imaging and spectroscopy, we reveal a remarkably deep polarization in non-ferroelectric SrTiO₃ near its interface with an ultrathin nonmetallic film of La_2/3Sr_1/3MnO₃. Electron holography shows an electric field near the interface in SrTiO₃, yielding a surprising spontaneous polarization density of ~ 21 μC/cm². Combining the experimental results with first principles calculations, we propose that the observed deep polarization is induced by the electric field originating from oxygen vacancies that extend beyond a dozen unit-cells from the interface, thus providing important evidence of the role of defects in the emergent interface properties of transition metal oxides.

Reentrant Insulating State in Ultrathin Manganite Films

The transport and magnetic properties of La{sub 0.7}Sr{sub 0.3}MnO{sub 3} thin-films grown by pulsed laser deposition on (LaAlO{sub 3}){sub 0.3}(SrAl{sub 0.5}Ta{sub 0.5}O{sub 3}){sub 0.7} single crystal substrates have been investigated. A systematic series with various thicknesses of La{sub 0.7}Sr{sub 0.3}MnO{sub 3} was used to establish a phase diagram - which showed a clear difference compared to films grown on SrTiO{sub 3} substrates, highlighting the importance of film thickness and substrate strain. Interface Engineered Room‐Temperature Ferromagnetic Insulating State in Ultrathin Manganite Films

Ultrathin epitaxial films of ferromagnetic insulators (FMIs) with Curie temperatures near room temperature are critically needed for use in dissipationless quantum computation and spintronic devices. However, such materials are extremely rare. Here, a room-temperature FMI is achieved in ultrathin La_0.9Ba_0.1MnO₃ films grown on SrTiO₃ substrates via an interface proximity effect. Detailed scanning transmission electron microscopy images clearly demonstrate that MnO₆ octahedral rotations in La_0.9Ba_0.1MnO₃ close to the interface are strongly suppressed. Thickness-driven phase transitions have been widely observed in many correlated transition metal oxides materials. One of the important topics is the thickness-driven metal to insulator transition in half-metal La_2/3Sr_1/3MnO₃ (LSMO) thin films, which has attracted great attention in the past few decades. In this article, we review research on the nature of the metal-to-insulator (MIT) transition in LSMO ultrathin films. We discuss in detail the proposed mechanisms, the progress made up to date, and the key issues existing in understanding the related MIT.
