We report the first experimental constraints on spectroscopic factors and strengths of key resonances in the P-30(p, gamma)S-31 reaction critical for determining the production of intermediate-mass elements up to Ca in nova ejecta. The P-30(d,n)S-31 reaction was studied in inverse kinematics using the GRETINA gamma-ray array to measure the angle-integrated cross-sections of states above the proton threshold. In general, negative parity states are found to be most strongly produced but the absolute values of spectroscopic factors are typically an order of magnitude lower than predicted by the shell-model calculations employing WBP Hamiltonian for the negative-parity states. ${}^{3}{He} (α, γ) {}^{7}{Be}$ and ${}^{3}H (α, γ) {}^{7}{Li}$ astrophysical S factors from the no-core shell model with continuum

The ³He(α,γ)⁷Be and ³H(α,γ)⁷Li astrophysical S factors are calculated within the no-core shell model with continuum using a renormalized chiral nucleon–nucleon interaction. The ³He(α,γ)⁷Be astrophysical S factors agree reasonably well with the experimental data while the ³H(α,γ)⁷Li ones are overestimated. The seven-nucleon bound and resonance states and the α + ³He/³H elastic scattering are also studied and compared with experiment. Here, the low-lying resonance properties are rather well reproduced by our approach. At low energies, the s-wave phase shift, which is non-resonant, is overestimated.

The first science result with the JENSA gas-jet target: Confirmation and study of a strong subthreshold ${}^{18}F (p, α) {}^{15}O$ resonance

The astrophysical ¹⁸F(p,α)¹⁵O rate determines, in large part, the extent to which the observable radioisotope ¹⁸F is produced in novae. This rate, however, has been extremely uncertain owing to the unknown properties of a strong subthreshold resonance and its possible interference with higher-lying resonances. In addition, the new Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics (JENSA) gas-jet target has been used for the first time to determine the spin of this important resonance and significantly reduce uncertainties in the ¹⁸F(p,α)¹⁵O rate.

β-delayed γ decay of 20Mg and the ${}^{19}{Ne} {(p, γ)}^{20} Na$ breakout reaction in Type I X-ray bursts

Certain astrophysical environments such as thermonuclear outbursts on accreting neutron stars (Type-I X-ray bursts) are hot enough to allow for breakout from the Hot CNO hydrogen burning cycles to the rapid proton capture (rp) process. An important breakout reaction sequence is ¹⁵O(α,γ)¹⁹Ne(p,γ)²⁰Na and the ¹⁹Ne(p,γ)²⁰Na reaction rate is expected to be dominated by a single resonance at 457 keV above the proton threshold in 20Na. The resonance strength and, hence, reaction rate depends strongly on whether this ²⁰Na state at an excitation energy of 2647 keV has spin and parity of 1⁺ or 3⁺.
