7000 year record of lake-level change on the northern Great Plains: A high-resolution proxy of past climate

Mineralogical and paleobotanical characteristics of the sedimentary fill in a shallow, saline lake in southeastern Alberta indicate that drought intervals are aperiodic and that climatic extremes unprecedented in historic time occurred earlier during the Holocene, when century-long intervals of repeated, intense droughts alternated with long periods when droughts were rare. Low-water intervals (signifying periods of drought) are recorded by carbonate-rich laminae containing abundant plant fossils indicative of hypersalinity. In contrast, highstands of relatively fresh water (outlining moist periods) are represented by massive, silicate-rich sediment with lower numbers of halophytic indicators.

Organic and inorganic fractions of sediment collected from the bottom of Walker Lake, Nevada, have been dated by carbon-14 techniques. Sedimentation rates and the organic-carbon content of the sediment were correlated with climatic change. The cold climate between 25,000 and 21,000 years ago caused little runoff, snow accumulation on the mountains, and rapid substantial glacial advances; this period of cold climate resulted in a slow sedimentation rate (0.20 millimeter per year) and in a small organic-carbon content in the sediment. Cores of lake sediment to a depth of 334 m in the town of Tulelake, northern California, document the late Cenozic paleolimnologic and paleoclimatic history of the northwestern Great Basin. Lacustrine diatoms are abundant throughout the record documenting a nearly continuous paleolimnologic history of the Tule Lake basin. Preliminary analysis of 128 pollen samples and seven radiocarbon dates from a 5-meter long, 10-cm diameter sediment core retrieved from Lower Pahranagat Lake (elevation - 975 in), Lincoln County, Nevada, gives us a rare, continuous, record of vegetation change at an interval of every 14 years over the last 2,000 years. During this period increasing Pinus (pine) pollen values with respect to Juniperus Ouniper pollen values reflect the increasing dominance of pinyon in southern Nevada woodlands during the last 2,000 years.
