Research report: Mathematical growth analysis techniques were used to determine the effects of carbon dioxide on the growth and biomass partitioning in corn (zea mays), itchgrass (Rottbiellia exalata concentrations of 350 ppM, 600 ppM, and 1000 ppM were considered. Dry matter production in soybean and velvetleaf was increased significantly by raising the CO2 concentration above 350 ppM. Dry matter production in itchgrass was greatest at 600 ppM; CO2 levels did not affect dry matter production in corn. Weed growth with each plant at the various CO2 concentrations was also measured. Convergence of daily light use efficiency in irrigated and rainfed C3 and C4 crops

The goal of this study is to quantify variability of daily light use efficiency (LUE) based on radiation absorbed by photosynthetically active vegetation (LUEgreen) in C3 and C4 crops. Data contained GPP, fAPAR, total and green leaf area index taken over 16 site years of irrigated and rainfed maize and 8 site years of soybean in 2001–2008 including years with quite strong drought events. LUEgreen in irrigated and rainfed sites were statistically indistinguishable showing low sensitivity to water availability. Mono specific stands of the C3 sedge, Scirpus olneyi, and the C4 grass, Spartina patens, were exposed to normal ambient or elevated CO2 (normal ambient + 340 ul/l) in open top chambers throughout two growing seasons. Photosynthesis in the C3 sedge measured in elevated CO2 or low O2 (air with 1% O2) was greater at all light levels than photosynthesis measured in normal ambient CO2. The MBPT (2) procedure with the 6-31g (asterisk) basis set was used to study nearly linear carbon chains. The theoretical vibrational frequencies of the molecules C3 through C9 are presented and, for C3 through C6, compared to experimental stretching frequencies and their (C-13)/(C-12) isotopomers. Predictions for C7, C8, and C9 stretching frequencies are calculated by directly scaling the theoretical frequencies with factors derived from experimental-to-theoretical ratios known for the smaller molecules. 28 refs.

The report describes methods for quantitating C4 and C3 coating of red blood cells using 125I anti-C4 and anti-C3. Two methods of preparing antisera were used: one involving absorption and elution from complement coated cells, and the other employing IgG fractions of antisera prepared on DEAE cellulose. The use of labeled antisera permits analysis of specificity by the highly sensitive technique of radioimmunoelectrophoresis. One problem with the technique is that results indicate uptake of labeled antisera, rather than amounts of coating substances.
