Accounting for transverse momenta of the quarks, a longitudinal quark spin asymmetry exists in a transversely polarized nucleon target. The relevant leading quark distribution {ital g}{sub 1{ital T}}({ital x},{ital k}{sup 2}{sub {ital T}}) can be measured in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. The average {ital k}{sup 2}{sub {ital T}} weighted distribution function {ital g}{sub 1{ital T}}{sup (1)} can be obtained directly from the inclusive measurement of {ital g}{sub 2}. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}

Transverse force tomography

While twist-2 GPDs allow for a determination of the distribution of partons on the transverse plane, twist-3 GPDs contain quark-gluon correlations that provide information about the average transverse color Lorentz force acting on quarks. We demonstrate how twist-3 GPDs can be used to provide transverse position information about that force.

Transverse momentum-dependent parton distributions for longitudinally polarized nucleons from domain wall fermion calculations at the physical pion mass

Previous Lattice QCD calculations of nucleon transverse momentum-dependent parton distribu?tions (TMDs) focused on the case of transversely polarized nucleons, and thus did not encompass two leading-twist TMDs associated with longitudinal polarization, namely, the helicity TMD and the worm-gear TMD corresponding to transversely polarized quarks in a longitudinally polarized nucleon. Based on a definition of TMDs via hadronic matrix elements of quark bilocal operators containing staple-shaped gauge connections, TMD observables characterizing the aforementioned two TMDs are evaluated, utilizing an RBC/UKQCD domain wall fermion ensemble at the physical pion mass.

Is there a relation between the distributions of transversely and longitudinally polarized quarks

The Wandzura-Wilczek and Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rules have been used to suggest a relation between the distributions of transversely and longitudinally polarized quarks, and to deduce that there is little transverse quark polarization in the valence region, contrary to the situation for longitudinal polarization. It is shown that these deductions are unjustified.
