Evolution of structure and magnetism across the metal-insulator transition in the pyrochlore iridate ${({Nd}_{1 - x} {Ca}_{x})}_{2} {Ir}_{2} O_{7}$

We report on the evolution of the thermal metal-insulator transition in polycrystalline samples of Nd₂Ir₂O₇ upon hole doping via substitution of Ca²⁺ for Nd³⁺. Ca substitution mediates a filling-controlled Mott-like transition with minimal resolvable structural changes and without altering site symmetry. Local structure confirms that Ca substitution does not result in local chemical phase separation, and absorption spectroscopy establishes that Ir cations maintain a spin-orbit entangled electronic configuration. The metal-insulator transition coincides with antiferromagnetic ordering on the Ir sublattice for all measured samples, and both decrease in onset temperature with Ca content. Spin-orbit entangled magnetic dipoles, often referred to as pseudospins, provide a new avenue to explore novel magnetism inconceivable in the weak spin-orbit coupling limit, but the nature of their low-energy interactions remains to be understood. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of the static magnetism and low-energy pseudospin dynamics in the archetypal spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr₂IrO₄. We find that in order to understand even basic magnetization measurements, a formerly overlooked in-plane anisotropy is fundamental. Correlation between antiferromagnetic and Mott states in spin orbit coupled ${Sr}_{2} Ir O_{4}$ : A study of ${Sr}_{2} {Ir}_{1 - x} M_{x} O_{4}$ ( $M = Fe$ or Co)

Sr₂IrO₄ is an archetypal spin-orbit-coupled Mott insulator with an antiferromagnetic state below 240 K. Here we report results of our study on single crystals of Sr₂Ir_1–xFe_xO₄ (0 ≤ x < 0.32) and Sr₂Ir_1–xCo_xO₄ (0 ≤ x < 0.22). Fe doping retains the antiferromagnetic state but simultaneously precipitates an emergent metallic state whereas Co doping causes a rapid collapse of both the antiferromagnetic and Mott states, giving rise to a confined metallic state featuring a pronounced linearity of the basal-plane resistivity up to 700 K.
