Heavy-ion fusion hindrance occurs at extreme sub-barrier energies. This behavior is well reproduced with a simple cross section formula, which was developed by Siwek-Wilczynska et al., based on a single-Gaussian distribution of fusion barrier heights, before the discovery of the hindrance phenomenon. This expression has not yet been widely used and referenced in the literature. An analysis by using this simple formula is presented for 29 systems, from ¹⁶O + ¹⁸O to ⁶⁴Ni + ¹²⁴Sn , all being measured down to less than 10μb. Near-barrier fusion and barrier distribution of {sup 58}Ni+{sup 54}Fe

Near- and sub-barrier fusion cross sections have been measured for the system {sup 58}Ni+{sup 54}Fe, and the fusion barrier distribution has been extracted. The measured cross sections cover the range from approx =1 mub up to around 500 mb. Close analogies are found between the extracted barrier distribution and the available data on {sup 58}Ni+{sup 60}Ni, indicating the dominating influence of complex surface vibrations on the fusion of {sup 58}Ni+{sup 54}Fe. The present data on {sup 58}Ni+{sup 54}Fe are well reproduced by standard coupled-channels calculations in the measured energy range, including quadrupole and octupole phonons in both colliding nuclei.

Barrier distributions from {sup 32}S+{sup 90,96}Zr quasi-elastic scattering: Investigation of the role of neutron transfer in sub-barrier fusion reactions

The differential cross sections of quasi-elastic scattering at backward angles were measured with high precision for {sup 32}S+{sup 90,96}Zr around the Coulomb barrier, and barrier distributions were extracted from the measured excitation functions. The experimental barrier distribution of {sup 32}S+{sup 90}Zr is well reproduced by the coupled-channels calculations including the low-lying quadruple and octupole vibrations in {sup 32}S and {sup 90}Zr. However, the model with the same coupling scheme fails to reproduce the experimental barrier distribution for {sup 32}S+{sup 96}Zr. Role of the {gamma} degree of freedom in sub-barrier fusion phenomena and effective barrier distributions

We investigate sub-barrier fusion phenomena in the presence of triaxial static deformations and under conditions of {gamma} instability. It is found that the distributions of effective barriers can reflect in a distinct way a general quadrupole profile specified in terms of both {beta}{sub 2} and {gamma}.
