A probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) was conducted to estimate the risk of accidental ignition (and consequent fire/explosion) from indoor refueling and servicing of compressed natural gas-fueled mass transit buses. Five scenarios were considered. Risks associated with each scenario for the refueling equipment, bus system, refueling/servicing facility, and refueling process were evaluated using event and fault tree analyses. The study considered the initiating events to be gas leakage and the presence of ignition sources, resulting in the top event (ignition). Probabilistic risk analysis (PRA) is being used to study design alternatives for the advanced neutron source research reactor being designed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for operation in the 1990s. Major communication paths between the designers and the safety analysts are accident discussions supported by event tables, event-tree graphics, and accident sequence probabilities. The BETA code used in conjunction with a word processor provides this linkage. This paper describes the process, features of the BETA, how it works, and some examples of usage.
Using fault trees to aid in developing an initiating event list for probabilistic risk assessments

This paper describes how using the built-in intelligence of linked fault trees to help identify initiating events can be an important part of a Probabilistic Risk Assessment analysis. It describes how this identification was done on a microcomputer-based application for a reactor Probabilistic Risk Assessment.
