The Alfvén Eigenmode Active Diagnostic system (AEAD) has undergone a major upgrade and redesign to provide a state-of-the-art excitation and real-time detection system for JET. The new system consists of individual 4 kW amplifiers allowing for increased current, separate excitation and real time control of relative phasing between antenna currents. The amplifiers have a frequency range of 10–1000 kHz, divided into various frequency bands by external matching filters. Here, this paper presents a dedicated study of plasma-antenna (PA) coupling with the Alfvén Eigenmode Active Diagnostic (AEAD) in JET. Stable AEs and their resonant frequencies f, damping rates γ < 0, and toroidal mode numbers n are measured for various PA separations and limiter versus X-point magnetic configurations. Two stable AEs are observed to be resonantly excited at distinct low and high frequencies in limiter plasmas. The values of f and n do not vary with PA separation. Gyrokinetic simulations of toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes excited by energetic ions and external antennas on the Joint European Torus

The gyrokinetic toroidal code (GTC) has been used to study toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) in high-performance plasmas. Experiments performed at the Joint European Torus (JET), where TAEs were driven by energetic particles arising from neutral beams, ion cyclotron resonant heating, and resonantly excited by dedicated external antennas, have been simulated. Modes driven by populations of energetic particles are observed, matching the TAE frequency seen with magnetic probes in JET experiments. A synthetic antenna, composed of one toroidal and two neighboring poloidal harmonics has been used to probe the modes' damping rates and quantify mechanisms for this damping in GTC simulations.more »« less
