Morphology and CO Oxidation Activity of Pd Nanoparticles on SrTiO ₃ Nanopolyhedra

Single crystal SrTiO3 nanocuboids having primarily TiO2-(001) surfaces and nanododecahedra having primarily (110) surfaces were created by two separate hydrothermal synthesis processes. Pd nanoparticles grown on the two sets of STO nanopolyhedra by atomic layer deposition show different morphologies and CO oxidation performance. Transmission electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering show that 2–3 nm Pd nanoparticles with 3–5 nm interparticle distances decorate the STO surfaces. When the number of ALD cycles increases, the growth of the Pd nanoparticles is more significant in size on TiO2-(001)-STO surfaces, while that on (110)-STO surfaces is more predominant in number. Influence of crystalline order and defects on the absolute work functions and electron affinities of TiO2- and SrO-terminated n-SrTiO3(001)

We establish how the detailed structure and composition of the terminal layer of n-SrTiO3 (001) determine key surface electronic properties. We have measured and calculated from first principles the absolute work functions and electron affinities of bulk SrNb0.01Ti0.99O3(001) with both TiO2 and nominally SrO terminal planes. The match between theory and experiment is excellent at 4.6(1) eV for the TiO2 termination if an ideal, bulk-truncated surface structure is assumed. In contrast, the ideal SrO-termination leads to a calculated work function that is ~1.3 eV lower than the experimental value of 3.6(1) eV. We show that this discrepancy is associated withmore »« less

The effects of sub-nanometer atomic layer deposition films of titania and alumina are compared for the acrolein hydrogenation selectivity of Pt/SrTiO3 catalysts. The titania-overcoated catalyst is similar to strong metal-support interaction catalysts formed by high temperature reduction, with a thin titania film on top of the supported Pt nanoparticles and an increase in allyl alcohol selectivity, neither of which are observed for the alumina-overcoated catalyst.

Structure Sensitivity of Acrolein Hydrogenation by Platinum Nanoparticles on Ba _x Sr _1-x TiO ₃ Nanocuboids

The structure sensitivity of Pt nanoparticles (Pt_N) for gas-phase acrolein (AC) hydrogenation was probed for Pt_N on Ba_xSr_1-xTiO₃ nanocuboid supports with (0 0 1) facets in a combined theoretical and experimental study. The in situ selectivity for allyl alcohol increased with the increase of the Sr concentration in the support, which corresponds to modifications in the stable Winterbottom shape and lattice strain of the Pt nanoparticles as a result of the interfacial energy between Pt and the Ba_xSr_1-xTiO₃ supports. “Local model” nanofacets of the Pt surface, edge, and corner morphologies were developed as compact representations of adsorption and reaction sites.more »« less
