Paramagnetic impurities in a quantum spin liquid give rise to Kondo effects with highly unusual properties. We have studied the effect of locally coupling a paramagnetic impurity with the spin-1/2 honeycomb Kitaev model in its gapless spin-liquid phase. The ( impurity) scaling equations are found to be insensitive to the sign of the coupling. The weak and strong coupling fixed points are stable, with the latter corresponding to a noninteracting vacancy and an interacting, spin-1 defect for the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic cases, respectively. We consider the quasi-two-dimensional pseudo-spin-1/2 Kitaev–Heisenberg model proposed for A{sub 2}IrO{sub 3} (A = Li, Na) compounds. The spin-wave excitation spectrum, the sublattice magnetization, and the transition temperatures are calculated in the random phase approximation for four different ordered phases observed in the parameter space of the model: antiferromagnetic, stripe, ferromagnetic, and zigzag phases. The Néel temperature and temperature dependence of the sublattice magnetization are compared with the experimental data on Na{sub 2}IrO{sub 3}.

Magnetic field induced spin liquids in $S = 1$ Kitaev honeycomb model

We investigate the ground state properties of the spin S = 1 Kitaev honeycomb model under a magnetic field based on the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation. With the time-reversal symmetry breaking due to the magnetic field, a gapped Kitaev spin liquid is identified for both ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev couplings. The topological nature of such a Kitaev spin liquid is manifested by a nearly quantized Wilson loop, degeneracy in the entanglement spectra, and the existence of edge modes. Signatures of magnetic-field-driven quantum phase transitions in the entanglement entropy and spin dynamics of the Kitaev honeycomb model

The main question we address is how to probe the fractionalized excitations of a quantum spin liquid (QSL), for example, in the Kitaev honeycomb model. Here, by analyzing the energy spectrum and entanglement entropy, for antiferromagnetic couplings and a field along either [111] or [001], we find a gapless QSL phase sandwiched between the non-Abelian Kitaev QSL and polarized phases. Increasing the field strength towards the polarized limit destroys this intermediate QSL phase, resulting in a considerable reduction in the number of frequency modes and the emergence of a beating pattern in the local dynamical correlations, possibly observable in pump-probemore » experiments.« less
