High thermal coarsening resistance of irradiation-induced nanoprecipitates in Cu-Mo-Si alloys

Irradiation by 1.8 MeV Kr ions at room temperature (RT) was employed to induce nanoprecipitation in two Cu-Mo-Si ternary alloys, Cu₉₆Mo₁Si₃ and Cu₉₀Mo_3.5Si_6.5. The nature and the stability of these precipitates during high temperature annealing and irradiation were studied using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. In Cu₉₀Mo_3.5Si_6.5, Kr irradiation at RT resulted in the formation of a high number density (>10²³ m^-3) of Mo-Si rich nanoprecipitates, ~3 nm in size, the formation of which was attributed to Mo-Si interactions during the thermal spike phase of displacement cascades. Irradiation-induced creep in metallic nanolaminates characterized by In situ TEM pillar nanocompression

Our work reports on irradiation-induced creep (IIC) measured on nanolaminate (Cu-W and Ni-Ag) and nanocrystalline alloys (Cu-W) at room temperature using a combination of heavy ion irradiation and nanopillar compression performed concurrently in situ in a transmission electron microscope. Furthermore, we observed appreciable IIC in multilayers with 50 nm layer thicknesses at high stress, ≈½ the yield strength, but not in multilayers with only 5 nm layer thicknesses.

The studies of irradiation-induced solute segregation (IISS) and irradiation-induced precipitation (IIP) in Ni-Si and Pd-Fe alloys have been completed. Progress is reported for several other projects: irradiation damage in binary Pd-Cr, -Mn and -V alloys (15 at. %); IIP in Pd-Mo and Pd-W alloys; IIP in Pd-25 at. % Cr alloy; and irradiation damage effects in proton-bombarded metallic glasses (Ni-65 Zr, 40 Fe 40 Ni 14 P6B). 27 figures. Radiation-Induced Phase Instabilities and Their Effects on Hardening and Solute Segregation in Precipitation-Strengthened Alloy 718

A classic example of radiation-induced phase instability and degraded mechanical properties occurs in g'-g" (gamma prime - gamma double prime) -strengthened alloy 718. During neutron irradiation at 288 degrees C, the Ni3Nb g" particles at grain boundaries and in the matrix disappear after a few dpa. At higher doses, the g' (present only in the matrix) also dissolves and reprecipitates. Hardness is unaffected by disappearance of the g", but decreases as the original g' particles dissolve.
