Constraining New Forces in the Casimir Regime Using the Isoelectronic Technique

We report the first isoelectronic differential force measurements between an Au-coated probe and two Au-coated films, made out of Au and Ge. These measurements, performed at submicron separations using soft microelectromechanical torsional oscillators, eliminate the need for a detailed understanding of the probe-film Casimir interaction. The observed differential signal is directly converted into limits on the parameters {alpha} and {lambda} which characterize Yukawa-like deviations from Newtonian gravity. We find {alpha} < or approx. 10{sup 12} for {lambda}{approx}200 nm, an improvement of {approx}10 over previous limits.

Thermal Casimir versus Casimir-Polder Forces: Equilibrium and Nonequilibrium Forces

We critically discuss whether and under what conditions Lifshitz theory may be used to describe thermal Casimir-Polder forces on atoms or molecules. An exact treatment of the atom-field coupling reveals that for a ground-state atom (molecule), terms associated with virtual-photon absorption lead to a deviation from the traditional Lifshitz result; they are identified as a signature of nonequilibrium dynamics. Even the equilibrium force on a thermalized atom (molecule) may be overestimated when using the ground-state polarizability instead of its thermal counterpart.

Thermal noise limitations to force measurements with torsion pendulums: Applications to the measurement of the Casimir force and its thermal correction

A general analysis of thermal noise in torsion pendulums is presented. The specific case where the torsion angle is kept fixed by electronic feedback is analyzed. This analysis is applied to a recent experiment that employed a torsion pendulum to measure the Casimir force. The ultimate limit to the distance at which the Casimir force can be measured to high accuracy is discussed, and in particular we elaborate on the prospects for measuring the thermal correction.

Geometrical determination of the sign of the Casimir force in two spatial dimensions

The Casimir force acting on an arbitrary smooth boundary partialGAMMA of a two-dimensional convex region GAMMA due to the zero-point energy of a scalar field phi(x,t) is shown to be repulsive whenever I = ..integral../sub partialGamma/K/sup 2/(sigma)dsigma<4..pi../sup 2/g (gapprox. =3.55). K(sigma) represents the curvature of the boundary partialGAMMA at the point sigma. If I>4..pi../sup 2/g the nature of the Casimir force cannot be determined by our method. The method used assumes that the Casimir energy can be regularized so that it is cutoff independent.
