In this work, two quaternary diamond-like semiconductors (DLSs) in the Cu-Zn-Ge-Se system, the known Cu₂ZnGeSe₄ (also referred to as CZGSe) and the new Cu₄ZnGe₂Se₇, are compared in terms of their crystal structures, electronic structures and physicochemical properties. Both compounds were prepared by high-temperature, solid-state synthesis at 800 degrees C. Single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine the structure of Cu₄ZnGe₂Se₇. The structures of both Cu₂ZnGeSe₄ and Cu₄ZnGe₂Se₇ can be considered as derivatives of cubic diamond. It is proposed that a new and potentially extensive class of scaffolding-like materials may be afforded by linking together centers with either a tetrahedral or an octahedral array of valences by rodlike connecting units. Some simple general principles concerning the design and construction of these frameworks are presented together with reasons for expecting them to show unusual and useful properties. The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties I–II{sub 2}–III–VI{sub 4} and I{sub 2}–II–IV–VI{sub 4} are investigated firstly by using the first-principles calculations. The investigation was done using the ab initio full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FPLAPW) method where the exchange–correlation potential was calculated with the frame of GGA and GGA+U. The theoretically predicted lattice parameters for I–II{sub 2}–III–VI{sub 4} and I{sub 2}–II–IV–VI{sub 4} alloys are in good agreement with existing experimental measurements.
